How to avoid roaming charges on your main SIM
With your travel eSIM handling data abroad, you want to be sure your main SIM doesn’t use data while roaming — otherwise a surprise bill could be waiting when you get home. Here’s how to set it up before you fly:
iPhone: Turn off Data Roaming for your main SIM
Open Settings → Cellular. Select your main SIM — the line with your phone number — and turn off “Data Roaming”.
iPhone: Select the eSIM as your data line
In Settings → Cellular → “Cellular Data”, select your travel eSIM. All data now goes through the eSIM — and remember to turn Data Roaming ON for the eSIM itself; it needs that to work abroad.
Samsung: Data roaming off for your main SIM
Open Settings → Connections → SIM manager and select the eSIM for Mobile data. Then go to Settings → Connections → Mobile networks and turn Data roaming off for your main SIM.
Google Pixel and other Android devices
Open Settings → Network & internet → SIMs. Select the eSIM for data and turn Roaming off for your main SIM.
Do keep your main line itself switched on
Keep your main line on so you can receive SMS — for example verification codes from your bank. Receiving SMS is free in most cases. But note: answering phone calls abroad can still cost money — let them go to voicemail and use internet calls (WhatsApp, FaceTime, Messenger) while you’re away.
